For anyone who has taken part in antenatal education classes, you’ll no doubt have been taught that loving touch creates oxytocin, the love hormone. The stimulation of oxytocin is often used to trigger childbirth, but it is also vital for physical and mental health and wellbeing in children and adults alike. 

Physical touch also increases levels of dopamine and serotonin in the body – two neurotransmitters that help regulate your mood and relieve stress and anxiety. So any class which majors on that parent-child connection of touch and being held will be an enormously beneficial experience for both parties.

Baby Massage is a great example of this kind of loving touch-based activity. Learning and engaging in baby massage routines can be a wonderful experience for your baby – but can also really help mums who might be struggling with PND, or a lack of connection to their baby.

Pregnancy is a lovely time to exercise. Classes can be a great way to meet other expectant mums, and staying as fit and active as you can will help enormously when it comes to giving birth – and the subsequent recovery.

If you are newly pregnant and also new to exercise then it’s a good idea to wait until you are 14 weeks into your pregnancy when the placenta is fully attached. If you have been exercising prior to pregnancy then it’s still a good idea to avoid anything new in those first 14 weeks.

Once you’re past that first period of pregnancy and feel ready to start some exercise, there are a number of key things to bear in mind as your bump starts to grow and the hormones surging through the body change the way your ligaments support you.

Diastasis Recti (aka Abdominal Separation)

What is it, how do you spot it and what can you do about it?

During pregnancy the right and left halves of the rectus abdominis muscles separate to accommodate your growing baby. In postpartum this gap can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 9 months to reduce. Everyone’s recovery is going to be different and a third of all new mums will have some level of diastasis recti.
