Becoming Mum: Understanding Matrescence
Understanding Matrescence & Building Your Toolkit
Have you ever thought: “Why does motherhood feel so different to what I expected?”
Or wondered where you have gone amongst the nappies, feeds, sleepless nights, school runs and endless mental load?
Whether you’re pregnant, have a tiny baby or your children are older, becoming a mum is a huge psychological, emotional and identity transition and one that doesn’t simply end once your baby arrives.
Join Dr Rosanna M, Clinical Psychologist and founder of Becoming Mum, for a morning exploring matrescence – the transition into motherhood – and building a practical psychological toolkit for navigating it.
So, what is matrescence?
Much like adolescence, matrescence describes a period of enormous change. Becoming a mother isn’t just about learning to care for a baby. Your identity, emotions, relationships, priorities and sense of self can all shift too.
And it doesn’t necessarily happen just once. Motherhood keeps evolving – through pregnancy, new babies, returning to work, growing families and different stages of our children’s lives.
Sometimes simply having a language for what’s happening can help us make sense of why motherhood can feel wonderful, exhausting, joyful, frustrating and overwhelming – sometimes all before breakfast.
Build your motherhood toolkit
Alongside understanding matrescence, Rosanna will introduce simple, evidence-based ideas from Clinical Psychology to help you:
• Understand what’s happening when you feel overwhelmed
• Navigate big or unexpected emotions
• Respond to yourself with more compassion and less self-criticism
• Find small, realistic ways to look after your own psychological needs
• Build tools you can actually use in everyday motherhood even when you’re running on very little sleep!
There’ll also be space to pause, reflect and connect with other mums because sometimes hearing “it’s not just me” makes a huge difference.
And you absolutely don’t need to be struggling to come along.
You might be pregnant and curious about the transition ahead, finding your feet with a new baby, or years into motherhood and still wondering how it has changed you.
This is a chance to understand yourself a little better, add some practical tools to your toolkit, and make some space for the person behind the mum.
Little ones are absolutely welcome if you need to bring them. But if you can come alone, we’d love you to take the opportunity for a proper breather and some time that is just for you
